Porn Wars

Our culture is in the midst of an epic cultural struggle, even perhaps a culture war. Much like the ridiculous and futile struggle to wipe out illicit drugs through incarcerating drug users, our nation struggles with the issue of porn. Right now there are too very opposing forces at work in our culture, and where things land when they play out is anyone’s guess.

On the one hand, we have the sex-positive forces working in our culture. Human sexuality has become more acceptable and porno right along with it. Starting in the middle 1970s, when certain pornography found acceptance as a acceptable and even fun thing for couples to go see together, and then exploding with the advent of the Internet into more American homes, sex videos have become more acceptable. Few people question their use, which some studies say is universal, and even couples look at these movies together. Porn stars have become celebrities in their own right in some cases, making the jump from x-rated film into the mainstream media with just a shrug and a chuckle for their past.

Contrast this with what happens when a model, Miss America contestant, politician or reality TV show star is suddenly caught with their own free sex videos. Our culture and media react with shock, falsely appalled at what these people are doing for erotic thrills despite the fact that we know very well that all of us are doing the same thing. The most right-wing politicians decry the existence of homosexuals while secretly browsing x-rated gay sites or even hiring male prostitutes to service them. What’s remarkable is we have amazing openness on one side, with all of our sexual thrills suddenly out in the open, while the other side continues to deny the elephant in the room as if it will suddenly go away. The law on the one hand seems determined to shut it down, while the other side is making more sexual media than ever.
