Sometimes they are used for more devious means like corporate espionage and they are paid to do their work. That may involve stealing the secrets of a certain industry, or it may involve planting a virus that undermines the target companies work or damages a specific project. This kind of work however can become dangerous very quickly for several reasons. One reason naturally is the punishment they will receive if caught. A second reason is that this espionage activity is obviously secretive and is rather counter productive to bragging rights. A hacker may want to let everyone know that he was responsible, and this could cause a dangerous clash with his employers who hired him. If they have had no problems with hiring someone do to this dirty deed they may have no problem with permanently silencing a loud mouth hacker who wants to expose their plot because of a big mouth. If they are particularly conniving that may indeed be their plan from the start to make sure all loose ends are cut off and nothing leads back to them.
